Goodbye Summer!

Autumn and Winter are hands down my favourite part of the year. As much as I love (and need) Vitamin D I long for knitwear, hot chocolate and welly boots. The slow cooker is being dusted off this week ready for stews, soups and casseroles and I cannot wait! Having said that though there are a few things I'll miss about summer.

1. BBQ'ed sweetcorn. Best thing in the world.

2. Sitting in the beautifully lit gardens of Udderbelly by Southbank with my tiny best friend.

3. The satisfaction of eating strawberries straight from the garden.

4. Beach trips and massive ice creams with my husband and his BFF.

5. Having my pick of in season fruit for breakfast and having the perfect excuse to use my beautiful Paisley Glass Bowls from Bow & Crossbones.

Little Black Dress Klaxon

I've never bought into the little black dress idea before. I like my going out/special dresses flouncy, colourful and cute but when I was asked to choose a few bits from Simply Be this dress caught my eye. Since becoming familiar with Scarlett & Jo and their Powerfit dresses I've realised that having a few classy, understated dresses in my wardrobe for when I fancy pretending to be a grown up wouldn't go a miss.

I love the nipped in waist, skater skirt and mesh top of the Simply Be dress. Mesh tops aren't something I've ventured into before, I love the idea of strapless dresses but I'm not entirely confident with bare shoulders so it's a good compromise. Plus it's a little 'ooh, nudey flesh but not, raunchy!'

Evening lighting in our house is baaaad.

I wore this to a 60th birthday party in our village hall so I might have been a smidge over dressed but I care not! To make the outfit feel a little more me I put my vintage glasses brooch on, some coral shoes and took a little coral heart embossed clutch I picked up in Tesco a while ago for about £3!

The flash is so unforgiving on my shiny face...

Curvy Kate; Underwear Love

I love underwear. It's a funny little thing that has been passed down through the generations on my mum's side to take pride in your pants! My mum told me that right up until my nana died if she was leaving the house she wore her roll on girdle and stockings. It makes me chuckle to think that I have things in my lingerie drawer that are identical to one's my nana would have had 60 years ago.

As much as I love retro and vintage style lingerie they're not always the most practical for every day. And having big ol' boobies and sizeable arse means a lot of the beautiful vintage lingerie I admire won't contain my lot. Fortunately for me there are quite a few lingerie companies that cater for big busts and I'm more than happy to keep my girdles and nylons for special occasions in favour of pretty, supportive comfort.

One of these brands that I cannot get enough of at the minute is Curvy Kate. I had a couple of Curvy Kate bras when they first launched in 2009 but due to not finding the right size and being too lazy to exchange them they sat in the back of my drawer as emergency bras. (Big mistake; don't keep bras that don't fit, your boobs are precious and they deserve good things!) So I brushed the brand aside and thought they just didn't suit my shape. Silly!

I was lucky enough to attend an event back in July where as well as learning more about the brand and seeing the beautiful new collection, I had a fitting. This event was the 3rd bra-related one I'd been to this year and I was fitted at them all. One fitting left me feeling pretty glum after being told I had odd shaped boobs and that 90% of bras wouldn't fit me so I should take whatever fits and not get too hung up on the design. I went away with a bra that although it was a different size to the one I went in still didn't fit right. Fortunately the other event I went to I was fitted properly (and told my boobs were a perfectly normal shape!) and the wonderful girls at Curvy Kate confirmed that. Infact they helped even more by letting me know my sister sizes and that catering to my slightly bigger boob might make life a bit more comfortable.

(Quick side note to say that fitting time was bloody marvellous and hilarious. Imagine 15 girls running around in their bras trying to grab a bra from a big pile in a room with huge windows that overlook a busy, hip street in Shoreditch. Loved it!)

After the event I was sent the beautiful Rosie set which despite a few teething problems (massive love and thank you to Himare for being so helpful and not batting an eyelid at my 47 emails with photos of my boobs in!) fits like a dream. Due to my boobs being quite far apart they don't sit quite right in the bottom of the cups of Curvy Kate bras which at first I thought would be a problem but it actually has no bearing on the support or shape I get from the bra at all! Turns out Curvy Kate do suit my shape, I just needed to be wearing the right size funnily enough!

See, magical floaty boobs! Top: Portia in seafoam, bottom: Lottie in white.
Rather serendipitously around that time I was perusing various sale websites and found a Curvy Kate sale at Brand Alley with bras for half price! I ordered three bras, the Portia in Seafoam (which was the bra I was fitted in at the event) and Lottie in both black and white. They are all so incredibly comfortable and all give me a lovely shape. The Lottie though is probably my favourite due to the slightly pointed shape it gives me.

Although I didn't get the matching knickers (they go up to a 22 but I'd prefer a 24) I have found various pairs in places like Yours Clothing and Simply Be that are a lovely match.

Plus size frilly knickers
These knickers from Yours are a close match for Rosie. Plus, they're frilly!

I can honestly say 80% of my bra drawer is Curvy Kate. They have such pretty designs as well as sensible, every day ones and I find they are the best support for my boobs due to the side structure. I do wish Curvy Kate did their knickers in larger sizes but having had a chat with the lovely Charlotte about that it's not something that is as easy as simply making them and chucking them out there. The fact that the brand have listened to customer feedback in the past and reworked certain styles of bra to resolve issues speaks volumes though, so you never know what the future holds!

The Rosie set was gifted to me, all other sets I purchased myself.

The Cutest Dress

To say I love this dress is an understatement. I don't know what it is about it because it's quite plain really and according to my husband very 'apron-y' but I love it! It makes me feel very twee and cutesy which I rather enjoy. The waistband has a tendency to ride up a bit so after wearing it for 5 minutes I lose the nice nipped in shape but I care not because it's so darn cute!

I really don't know what's going on with my mouth...

See, goodbye waistband!

Handbag from Accessorize
Hair flower from GG's Pin-Up Couture
'Love' necklace from John Lewis

I was very kindly gifted this necklace and although I was a little apprehensive at first because I normally avoid delicate jewellery due to being a big fat fatty, I am so taken with it! I made a wish list earlier in the year with a necklace very similar on and I'm so pleased one fell into my hands. It makes me feel so dainty and pretty! Plus I love the name 'you, me, oui' and not just because my husband likes to say 'oui' a lot in the style of Mr Tourette from Modern Toss...

ps. This has been scheduled to publish whilst I'm at Plus North which I am ridiculously excited about! Expect a couple of posts next week all about it :)

Feeling Powerful in the Powerfit!

I first became aware of Evans exclusive brand Scarlett & Jo back in January at the Evans Shape Studio. The Powerfit dress was the star of the day with so many of us including myself which completely surprised me as it's not a style I had ever touched before. Infact it took a lot of wine and encouragement for me to try it on! But I was so, so glad when I did.

The idea behind the Powerfit dress is that the shape and the stylish panelling provides a classic hourglass shape whilst being incredibly supportive and comfortable for all shapes and sizes. Most are made with a soft mesh lining which gives that extra bit of structure whilst remaining comfy. Originally it was only available in the gorgeous cobalt blue above and red. However, after proving to be such a hit it's available in over 15 different designs and colours including leopard print and lace. As with all Scarlett & Jo items the pricing is very reasonable and the most expensive choice is only £45.

When I was offered to be sent the Powerfit dress in Grape to feature I was excited but a little apprehensive because the dress is quite out of my comfort zone. I'm not particularly fashionable, I don't know what's on trend and I tend to throw things together regardless of whether or not they match! However, after popping the dress on a couple of times and realising just how comfortable and good I felt in it, I stopped flapping and got on with it!

Shapewear may or may not have been involved in the making of this tummy...
True to my love of rockabilly fashion I popped a purple hair flower in to complement the colour in the dress and dug out a pair of leopard print shoes. I also took the opportunity to wear my favourite pair of seamed nylons.

Oh hi there, bum shelf.
This is the sort of dress I would normally have run a mile from due to it being fitted and showing my tummy but thanks to some shapewear and the mesh structure inside, it wasn't half as scary as I imagined! Infact, I actually felt pretty awesome in it! A tight dress that shows off my curves, heels, stockings and pearls...I liked it. Powerfit is the definitely the right name for these dresses because this certainly made me feel oddly powerful!

If you've looked at these dresses and thought 'there's no way I can pull that off', think again. Order one online to try (Evans accept returns within 28 days) or pop into one of the selected stores and try it on. If I can do it, so can you!

Granny Dress, Kitty & Lucite

Today's outfit post is a quick one. I picked this dress up in Sainsburys of all places! It reminds me of a 1940's tea dress but with a modern flat collar and roll up sleeves. My husband isn't a fan and my mum told me it looked like something her granny would wear but I love it!

Bella-cat wanted in on the action.
Oof, I love her.
Don't look at my half polished toes...

I teamed the granny dress with some rough victory rolls, a slick of red lipstick, some cute bow shoes my lovely mum bought me in the sales and a pair of lucite earrings. You can't see them on me so I took this to show you the sheer bloomin' beauty of them!

I realise my last few outfit posts have featured a Pieces of the Past item but what do you want from me? Everything is so pretty! And handmade in the UK. And pretty.

Thank You

I just wanted to say a quick but very sincere thank you to everyone who took the time to comment or tweet me on my health post earlier this week. I haven't had a chance to reply to everyone yet but I will do. Your support and kindness was so touching and I went to bed that night feeling quite overwhelmed but very positive. I feel so fortunate to have this outlet because not only has it given me confidence I never, ever imagined I would have but I've met some truly beautiful people. Whether you're someone I spend real life time with or have only ever exchanged a small message with, thank you. You will never know the impact you all have had and continue to have on me. I love you all, dearly.

And just in case you or I forget again ;)
